Over 4,000 feet in elevation, and right on the edge of Wallowa-Whitman National forest, Joseph, Oregon is a destination that shouldn't be missed in any vacation to the Idaho or Oregon areas. Close to Eagle Cap Wilderness Area and the Gateway to Hells Canyon Recreation Area, it is a favorite among outdoor enthusiasts. The city was named for the Nez-Perce Indian, Chief Joseph, who was well known in this region from pioneer days.
You can go horseback riding on the many trails, try your hand at hunting big game, go boating on Wallowa Lake or just relax and visit the art galleries in town. In July, see one of the top rodeos in the nation, Chief Joseph Days Rodeo, or the Alpenfest in October.
Stay in Chalets or RV parks or a motel or hotel. There is also camping with plenty of facilities to accommodate you.
To get to Joseph from McCall, Idaho, take ID-55 to US-95, jog over to ID-71 then left on OR-86.Get on Wallowa Mountain Loop for 11 miles, then left on Imnaha Highway. Follow signs to Joseph.
